Fuel For Thought

Oil Heating System After jumping to nearly $2 a gallon last winter, prices for home heating oil are expected to remain pretty much flat this winter.

Scheduled replacement of air, oil, gas, fuel, transmission and other filters extend car life and improve performance.

Local Heating Oil Prices Not so for natural gas. According to federal projections, prices are expected to rise, on average, by 9 percent over last year's home heating season. And that's on top of a sharp spike last winter, when temperatures were unusually cold.

Solid fuel heating boilers are mostly limited to back boilers, which are fitted at the back of gas fires, or kitchen ranges. Some solid fuel boilers run the same way as other fuelled boilers and use automatically fed pellets from a hopper situated outside the house. Most solid fuel heating systems are inefficient as they consist of open fires; they also can be messy and require cleaning out once a day at least.

Residential Heating Oil Prices With the cost of the two fuels now more competitively aligned than they had been, the heating oil and natural gas industries have cranked up the debate over which fuel represents a better buy for consumers.

Biodiesel can be made from any fat or vegetable oil, such as soybean oil, and can be used either as a heating or transportation fuel. Biodiesel can be added to heating oil with few or no modifications to a furnace or boiler. It can be blended with regular No. 2 heating oil at any level, but a blend of 20 percent biodiesel and 80 percent regular heating oil is common.

Maine Heating Oil Prices It generally costs more to heat a home with oil than natural gas, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. It projects consumers will pay an average of $927 to heat their homes with oil, compared to an average of $841 for natural gas.

Cheap Heating Oil But that has not stopped oil dealers from hitting the airwaves. In radio ads, the National Oilheat Research Alliance is pitching its product with many of the same arguments gas suppliers have used in recent years.

E85 is a fuel blend that is only about 15% gasoline and 85% ethyl alcohol made from corn and other crops. U.S. President George W. Bush has ardently encouraged the use and development of E85 and other alternative fuels to minimize dependence on foreign oil imports. However, fuel vehicles like the new 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee. One of these problems is the limited number of gas stations that offer E85 fuel.

Heating Oil Prices Ct "It's reliable, it's clean and it's efficient," said John Huber, president of the alliance, which is paying for the campaign, its first in two years.

Heating Oil Delivery "We're trying to give it a better image," Huber said. "It's a good product, but people generally don't have a good perception of it."

Heating Oil Nj For their part, gas utilities such as New Jersey Natural Gas and Public Service Electric & Gas are offering rebates and incentives to switch through inserts in customers' bills.

Connecticut Heating Oil In New Jersey, 66 percent of the homes are heated by gas and 19 percent by home heating oil. The only other significant heating source is electricity, with about 10 percent of market share, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Heating Oil Long Island These days, virtually all new housing starts are on natural gas, particularly if they are already near a natural gas main, according to Richard Duffy, manager of utility marketing for Public Service Electric & Gas, the state's largest gas utility, with more than 1.6 million customers.

Heating Oil Ct "What we've heard from builders, it's just more appealing to homeowners," says Daphne Magnuson, a spokeswoman for the American Gas Association, which is based in Washington. "The deciding factor is the comfort level we have with the consumer. It's the cleanest-burning fossil fuel."

Discount Heating Oil Gas suppliers also like to emphasize that switching to natural gas means you only pay for it when you need it, unlike heating oil, which can sit unused in a storage tank.

Heating Oil Partner But DeGesero argues that the storage capability of home heating oil works to the benefit of consumers, since it allows them to buy the fuel when prices are low. Many customers do just that with pre-payment plans, locking in prices before the winter starts when prices are lower.

Heating Oil Prices And Home heating oil customers also can avoid sudden price spikes during periods of peak demand by purchasing the fuel under a capped-price contract. In this case, the dealer commits to a price ceiling: Customers pay less if prices are less, but are guaranteed not to pay more than the cap if prices go up.

Connecticut Heating Oil Prices Gas utilities counter with rebate programs and other incentives to lure customers to switch to natural gas.

Heating Oil Cost New Jersey Natural Gas, one of the nation's fastest-growing utilities, is adding between 11,000 and 12,000 customers each year, with about one-third converting from some other fuel such as heating oil or electricity.

Home Heating Oil Company The Wall Township-based utility offers various incentives for switching to gas heat. This winter, up until Dec. 31, the utility is offering customers a free furnace if they switch to gas, plus rebates of $300 if they purchase a high-efficiency system, according to Bob Gallo, director of sales. The offer is worth $1,500, he said.

Fuel Oil For Heating The company tailors its incentive program each year after a consultant interviews 1,000 people who do not have natural gas about their preferences, Gallo said.

Home Heating Oil Prices Ma Some energy experts say that in the long run, the price of natural gas and home heating oil tend to even out. What consumers really ought to be concerned with is conserving energy, they say.

Complete Guide To Residential "Don't change it based on prices of the product -- put your money into energy efficiency and conservation," said Davis Bookhart, senior project analyst for the Consumer Energy Council of America.

Heating Oil Prices Nj "Our rule of thumb is: Whatever fuel you use, the less you use, the better off you are because you are less vulnerable to price spikes," Bookhart said.
